March 2010
ccording to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year 2010 is the "Year of the Tiger.” But as Princetonians, we know that every year is the Year of the Tiger! And each year, through their gifts to Annual Giving, thousands of alumni, parents, and friends support the extraordinary opportunities for learning and discovery at Princeton. Our Class of 1955 has played an important role in helping Princeton maintain its core strengths, giving almost $17 million back to the University since our graduation.
As you know, the unrestricted funds raised through Annual Giving allow Princeton to meet its highest priorities. A few of these include sustaining the fi nancial aid budget in difficult economic times, maintaining library and laboratory resources, and providing start-up funds to support important new initiatives such as the Bridge Year Program. Annual Giving also provides the University with vital resources to help preserve the core educational programs and extracurricular activities essential to the Princeton experience.
In the spirit of this official Year of the Tiger and our 55th Reunion, if you have not made a gift already, we hope you will join us by contributing to this year’s Annual Giving campaign and help to continue the tradition of giving back to Princeton. A reply card and envelope are enclosed; you can also visit our secure server at www.princeton.edu/ag or call the 24-hour gift line at 800-258-5421. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,

Alumni support made a huge difference for Princeton under difficult conditions in 2008-09 |

At this time in previous years, you have received in the mail a report on the final results of Annual Giving. This year, as part of Princeton's cost-saving and sustainability initiatives, the report is being distributed electronically instead. To view the 2008-09 Final Report, please click on the image below. It is a good story: $44.6 million and 57.7% participation.
If you prefer to receive a printed copy, just send us an email: tigers@Princeton.edu or call us: 609-258-3373. We have a small supply available and will be glad to send you a copy. We are most grateful to all of the alumni, parents, and friends whose dedication and generosity made the 2008-09 campaign so successful, especially at a time when the impact at Princeton is even greater than usual. |

A note from Bob McCartney '56 National Gift Planning Chair
Dear Members of the Class of 1955,
Take a look at a new Princeton short movie filled with archival footage and memorable Tiger tunes. I'm sure you'll appreciate the spectacular photography and beauty of the campus in the "Gifts for All Seasons" video, as well as examples of how bequests and trusts have helped to shape our campus.
In addition to annual and outright gifts, planned gifts have played a significant part in Princeton's history. In the next week or so, please look out for a letter from Mike Robbins '55, who will share some information about planned gifts that benefit the Aspire Campaign, you and your family.
In the meantime, enjoy the video!
Best wishes,
 Robert C. McCartney '56
PS New IRA legislation that allows taxpayers 70½ or older to make gifts directly to a charity from an IRA. See the gift planning website for more information. | | |
Another record breaking year for '55 and Princeton AG!!
Congratulations, Gentlemen!
The 2007/2008 Annual Giving Campaign has once again gone well beyond all expectations!
You and the thousands of AG volunteers have helped raise $54,109,304 -- the highest amount ever in Princeton history! This is 10% more than last year -- $49.0 million -- and well over the goal! Overall participation increased again this year to 59.2% from the most alumni ever -- the envy of every other college in the country.
'55 did outstandingly once again, too, thanks to the efforts of you, the Section Chairs and Swat Team, by writing, calling, and probably cajoling your classmates to urge them to contribute. Under the able leadership of Bill Shafer and Rich Herbruck, you raised $277,871 -- well above the dollar goal and the highest amount for a non-major year in '55 history! WOW!!
Participation, in which Herbie has done a terrific job building toward the 55th, came in at 70.5% of the Class! (Up two more -- 434 -- from his email last week.) This is a full percentage point above last year, and the highest participation for a non-major for '55 in forty years! Double WOW!!!
I'll be mailing out more detailed information to the Section Chairs on your donors and class statistics in the next week. A list of all donors for the Swatters is attached. Thank you again for making this such a great year for your Class and for all of us at Princeton -- the "Best Old Place of All."
A locomotive cheer to you all in '55! Onward to AG 2008-2009 and your 54th Reunion AG campaign!
Best regards,
Paul
