For the past three decades, alumni of the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington at Seattle have praised two highlights of their undergraduate experience: Professor Donald Hellmann and his Task Force Program. It began 35 years ago when a group of 15 students were asked to research and analyze a current crisis in international affairs and present their own policy recommendations to an independent expert. Since 1983, more than 3,200 students have participated in over 200 Task Force courses, gaining wide recognition among peer institutions and helping to make International Studies the fastest growing major in the College of Arts and Sciences. A recent endowment permanently established the Donald C. Hellmann Task Force Program .This will allow the Jackson School to create partnerships with peer institutions around the world, enable more international travel opportunities, and fund a fellowship award in honor of Professor Hellmann and his late wife Margery. This endowment was funded by his son Jack and daughter-in-law Betsy in recognition of Professor Hellmann's distinguished 51 year teaching career at the University of Washington.
