Princeton Project 55

Princeton Project 55 (PP55) is an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, founded by members of the Princeton Class of 1955, dedicated to providing opportunities for college alumni to improve our society. By bringing alumni together with students and recent graduates, Princeton Project 55 provides many opportunities for building the commitment, leadership, and mentoring needed to solve critical issues affecting the public interest.

Princeton Project 55 believes that there is a vast untapped resource of energy and expertise among college alumni that is available for the public good. We accomplish our mission through a variety of approaches including matching recent graduates with year-long fellowships in public-service organizations, providing mentors and professional development; supporting alumni from other universities engaged in similar initiatives; and collaborating with on-campus programs to raise the profile of civic engagement among current undergraduates.

Updates

The work of Princeton Project 55 is only made possible by supporters and partners like you. Through your investment and partnership, this organization has provided 1200 young Princeton alumni with an experience unlike any other—one that broadens their horizons and improves cities and communities across the nation. We have also replicated our model at 28 other institutions across the country. This is the type of impact Project 55 has had. This is the type of impact we will grow for the future.

Princeton Project 55 recently released a new video highlighting the impact we have had our first 20 years.

Also, Kathleen Reilly, Executive Director reports...

After placing 40 new fellows in the public interest this year, Project 55 successfully kicked off our 20th Anniversary celebration at Reunions 2009. Project 55 alumna, Katrina Browne ’89 screened her documentary film Traces of the Trade: a Story from the Deep North to a sold out crowd in the Frist Performance Theatre. Jim Floyd ’69, Rishi Jaitly ’04, and Charles Best of DonorsChoose.org spoke on a service panel moderated by Kate McCleery ’75, PP55 Board member and Deputy Executive Producer for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”  Project 55 will go on the road in 2009-10 to celebrate our anniversary in cities across the country, culminating in a 20th Anniversary fundraising gala in Princeton on Thursday, May 27, 2010.

Princeton Project 55 Current Programs

Princeton Project 55 is the leading national organization that brings together college alumni of all ages to participate in activities that benefit the public and raise individual civic engagement. Through our programs, we provide opportunities for alumni of all ages and institutions to put their passions to work in the public interest.

Fellowship Programs

The Public Interest and Public Health Fellowship Programs provideopportunities for recent Princeton graduates to develop a lifelong commitment to civic engagement and to prepare for effective civic leadership through year-long fellowships in nonprofit and community organizations. Alumni volunteers identify opportunities for fellows, provide training and support, and mentor fellows. Since 1990, Princeton Project 55 has placed more than 1,150 young Princetonians in summer or year-long positions of significant responsibility at more than 350 nonprofits across the country. The Alumni Network

Princeton Project 55 created The Alumni Network in the spirit of spreading Princeton Project 55's model of alumni civic engagement. It is with great excitement and gratitude that Princeton Project 55 announces the receipt of a new grant from the Abbey K. Starr Charitable Trust. This grant is an opportunity to expand Project 55’s impact for fellows, alumni, and organizations promoting civic engagement.

Gifts from internship and fellowship alumni, new donors, and increased gifts from current donors
will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $55,000 from January-December 2008
.

As you know, since 1990, Project 55 has placed nearly 1,150 Princeton students and graduates in more than 1,300 summer and year-long fellowships at nonprofit organizations across the nation.

We believe Project 55’s success toward the fellowship program goals of “creating a lifelong commitment to civic engagement” and “instilling a desire to prepare for and seek opportunities for civic leadership” in fellows and alumni will be greatly aided with this grant.

Specifically, this grant will allow us to:
  • Increase leadership and professional development opportunities for fellows
  • Provide greater support and resources to the network of current fellows, alumni, and other volunteers
  • Improve screening of, and provide training and resources to partner organizations
  • Continue to invest in technological infrastructure to allow for virtual networking and professional opportunities
  • Increase evaluation of the program and its impact on organizations, fellows, and communities
We are excited to see the new ways in which alumni and supporters like yourself will step up to the $55,000 Challenge. Join us as we envision an even greater impact on organizations and communities through the alumni we mobilize in the public interest.
