CLASS OF 1955 AMAZON VOYAGE SEPTEMBER 10-19, 2010

 Dear Classmate:

Hopefully, you have already signed up for our 55th Reunion. If you have not yet registered, please do so before reading further. The next class activity after that great celebration will be a voyage on the Amazon River. The Class of 1955 has traveled to Tuscany, Spain, Alaska, Eastern Europe on the Danube, the Galapagos Islands, and Sicily, the Amalfi Coast and Rome. Each trip was made special by the common thread of ’55 friends enjoying the experience together. In September 2010 we will be enjoying the ever changing panorama of the Amazon River aboard the 28 passenger riverboat, La Amatista.  International Expeditions, the world leader in nature travel, has planned this expedition for us.

On Friday, September 10 we will fly to Lima, Peru. The next day we will tour this historic city in the morning and then fly over the Andes Mountains to Iquitos before driving to the small port town of Nauta.  There we will board the La Amatista which will be our home for the next seven days. During this time we will travel along the Amazon and explore many of its tributaries and also visit riverside villages to learn about the lives of the “Ribereno” people who live there. We will visit the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve which is the home of 450 bird species, 102 species of mammals, 130 species of reptiles and amphibians, and countless plants. During our explorations we can expect to see sloths, squirrel monkeys, saddle backed tamarin, piranha, giant river otters, gray and pink dolphins, red howler, canary winged parakeets, parrots, blue and gold and scarlet macaws, herons, wattled jacanas, horned screamers and an infinite variety of beautiful plants, flowers and trees. On day nine we will fly back to Lima where we will have a half day of leisure to explore the city on our own. The next day September 19 we will fly home or continue an extension to Machu Picchu and Cusco. More detailed information about the trip and the ship can be found at www.ietravel.com.

The double occupancy cost is $3148 per person lower deck and $3348 upper deck. The La Amatista deck plan can be found at www.ietravel.com click on Amazon Trip.  There is an additional single supplement cost of $1574 which is limited to the lower deck. Included in the cost are eight breakfasts and lunches and seven dinners. It also includes two nights in Lima at the Swissotel. Not included are gratuities to naturalist  guides and the boat crew, bar tabs and round trip airfares from your home to Lima and from Lima to Iquitos. Trip cancellation insurance is also not included but can be obtained from International Expeditions. They will also assist in making your airline reservations

To register, complete the Reservation Certificate and forward it to the person and address indicated on the form. A $600 per person reservation deposit is required. If paying by check make it payable to International Expeditions. Final payment of the balance due must be made by June 10. International Expeditions will hold the boat exclusive for the Class of 1955 until March 10. Since the riverboat holds only 28 passengers and we will operate on a first come first served basis with the intention of filling the boat with classmates before that date. It is imperative that you sign up early to ensure that you are included. Hip! Hip! Ole!

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                R. Gordon Douglas
